Max Hydration Methods & You
As an African American woman, I know that making time to care for your hair can be hard, but I have learned that the healthier it is the easier it is to do. With that being said, I’d like to introduce you to Max Hydration.
Max Hydration is the stage at which the hair’s curl pattern is the most defined and obvious.
Hydration is more important than just the curl definition it can bring. Max hydration improves the overall health of your hair by opening your hair follicles and allowing your scalp and individual hair strands to absorb the moisture. Regardless of what texture of hair you have, achieving max hydration is also a great way to learn how to take care of it.
Often, we use products that block out moisture, which also means that we might not notice that we are only going through the motions of taking care of our hair. For a while I found myself going through the motions of taking care of my hair. I’d do hair masks and other things the hair gurus on YouTube recommended but didn’t pay much attention to the things my hair needed.
My experience with max hydration is with type four-ish hair. I say four-ish because I’ve just recently begun seeing results and it’s making me question my hair type. I used to be certain I had 4C hair, but the closer I get to having fully hydrated hair, the further up the type 4 scale I go. (A common misconception is that max hydration is the most beneficial to kinkier hair types, but any hair type can benefit from obviously healthier hair)
I also used to be the person who had several curl patterns in various parts of my head, but I am starting to realize that it was because some sections were more hydrated than others and therefore the curls were more defined in those sections. This doesn’t mean that it is impossible for a person to have differing curl patterns in various sections of their head, but sometimes it’s just an indicator of the various stages of the health of one’s hair.
Just pay attention to the things that work for you and get rid of things that don’t.
The set way to achieve hydrated hair is called the Cherry Lola Caramel treatment. There are people across the internet that say this is the only and best way to achieve max hydration; however, I think that the journey to fully hydrated hair can be personalized.
The basic steps of the Max Hydration process are the following 5 steps:
- Co-wash and finger detangle
- Clay rinse
- Leave in product
- Sealing product
I tried the Cherry Lola treatment for a while a few years ago when I was actively trying to reach max hydration, but I got my best results when I started doing less with my hair physically but adding quality to the things I decided to do.
My regimen isn’t necessarily set in stone because I make changes based on the needs of my hair, but it generally consists of a few things.
First, I wash my hair once a week or more frequently if I am doing styles or activities that require it. I have concocted my own shampoo that I use but I haven’t yet perfected. This means that each batch is a little different from the last. I also deep condition at least once every other week. The ingredients of my deep conditioner change depending on the condition of my hair, but my favorite deep conditioning mixture is a modified Bentonite clay mask. Bentonite clay is one of my favorites because it is a way to detox your hair to allow yourself to start completely fresh. I add my detangling conditioner, honey, and sometimes avocados. I use warm water to mix everything together and after applying this mixture to my hair, I let it sit for a little under a shower cap.
Everyone’s hair journey is different, which means that things that I have mentioned work for my hair and give me great results but might not give you the same results. It’s important to experiment and see what works specifically for your hair because nobody can understand your hair’s needs better than you can. Just pay attention to the things that work for you and get rid of things that don’t. In the words of Zendaya, “Do you, boo boo.”
